Safety Guidelines for Excavators

When Natural Gas Facilities are Involved:

 

  1. Anticipate the possibility of gas utility conflicts as a part of all underground construction.

 

  1. Premark the area of construction in white, where state law requires.

 

  1. Properly notify your local one call center:

 

CT: “Call Before You Dig (CBYD)” at 1-800-922-4455

ME, MA, NH, RI, VT: “Dig Safe” at 1-888-344-7233

NJ:  “New Jersey One-Call" at 1-800-272-1000

NY:  "Dig Safely New York" at 1-800-962-7962

 

  1. Provide adequate training and supervision to employees to assure that good construction practices are followed on the jobsite.

 

  1.  Properly maintain all underground utilities marking in accordance with state law requirements.

 

  1.  Hand dig in the area of underground gas facilities.

 

  1.  Provide adequate protection and support for gas facilities.

 

  1.  Notify the gas company immediately if a gas facility is damaged or disturbed so they can make repairs if required.

 

  1.  Use and properly compact suitable backfill material around gas facilities.

DON'T GUESS WITH GAS
